One of my favorite hobbies is spearfishing while freediving. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you’re multiple stories under the water searching for that prized fish. Keeping calm while having surges of adrenaline makes for an intense experience to say the least. For those freedivers out there I don’t need to say anymore, but for those unfamiliar with the sport, please see my post on freediving here!

I will never forget the morning of the first Gene Doyle fishing tournament. We had a sleep over at my house so we could get out early the next morning. I couldn’t sleep at all I was so excited. Fantastic February Fishing!

Capt. Mark Ward

Capt. Mark Ward

I’ve been guiding for over 25 years after receiving my 50 ton USCG license in 1987. In 1990 I was approached by Orvis and was asked if I’d like to be on the Orvis Endorsed guide staff. This relationship turned into the Everglades Angler Fly shop and Outfitter which I opened in 1992. For sixteen I ran the shop, Orvis Endorsed Guide Service and guided part time. I’m now back on the water guiding full time and doing what I love, being on the water, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. I especially love kids, helping them catch fish and teaching them about the wonders of this special estuary.

Fishing in SW Florida is incredibly diverse, with a host of different species able to be caught, depending on the time of year. February is one of the best months to catch a variety of fish. Snook, redfish, trout, snapper, pompano, sheepshead, backcountry goliath, gag grouper and many other fish can be caught. If it’s warm, tarpon will even show up. Continue reading
